About the Journal

History of the Journal

Intonations is an online peer-reviewed graduate journal founded by the Department of Music at the University of Alberta and launched in February 2019. In September 2019, the journal was expanded to include the departments of Drama and Art and Design. The journal strives for an interdisciplinary focus within the various domains of the three departments as well as across other academic fields in the arts, humanities, and sciences.

Focus and Scope

Experimental and cross-disciplinary, Intonations aspires to serve as an effective sounding board for all areas of arts research, including, but not limited to: ethnomusicology, musicology, music theory, composition, popular music studies, performance, philosophy and aesthetics, music technology, music pedagogy, music cognition, interdisciplinary studies, improvisation, sound art, video games, voice, poetics, dance, somatics, voice pedegogy, theatre practices, scenography, new media, performance art, visual art and design. Authors, composers, and performers are encouraged to take advantage of the multimedia capabilities of Intonations in developing creative scholarship at the intersection of research and practice.

Open Access Policy

This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.

Archiving

This journal utilizes the LOCKSS system to create a distributed archiving system among participating libraries and permits those libraries to create permanent archives of the journal for purposes of preservation and restoration. More...
